PFA584 Floor Scale

Configure It Once, Deploy It Everywhere
The PFA584 was designed to eliminate the complexity of site-by-site scale procurement. A globally standardised set of components — platform, feet, load cells, interface — can be mixed and matched to build exactly the scale your application demands.

Out-of-the-Box Accuracy
Factory calibration values are stored directly in the scale. The moment it’s powered up, it’s measuring accurately. No on-site calibration required to get started.

Globally Approved for Multinational Operations
One scale. One approval. Pre-approved globally under OIML and regional directives, the PFA584 eliminates the country-by-country compliance overhead that adds weeks to commissioning timelines.

Versatile Interface Options
Choose from wired analog, SICSpro digital, or cable-free wireless load cells depending on your environment and integration requirements. Works with the widest range of Mettler Toledo terminals.

Configurable for Hazardous Areas
The PFA584 can be configured with intrinsically safe load cells for Zone 2/22 deployment. Wet and dry environments both supported.

PTA469 Floor Scale (U-Shaped Pallet Scale)

Load It Faster
The U-shaped design eliminates ramps entirely. Move the pallet jack into the open channel, lower the load, done. No inclines to navigate, no time wasted. Your weighing process just got faster.

Safer by Design
No ramp means no one has to push heavy loads uphill. Workers, forklifts, and pallet jacks enter from the side — reducing strain, reducing risk, reducing accidents. Hazard elimination built into the product geometry.

Longer Platform Life
Wheeled vehicles never cross the platform — they load into it. That eliminates the wear and impact damage that shortens a conventional floor scale’s working life. The PTA469 delivers a significantly better ROI over its lifecycle.

Easy to Clean, Easy to Move
The U-shape reduces surface area. Built-in handles let a single operator lift and reposition the scale. Designed for the kind of rapid turnaround that food processing and pharmaceutical environments demand.

Expandable
Optional attachments convert the U-platform into a standard rectangular floor scale, enabling weighment of loads larger than the base footprint. One purchase, multiple configurations.

SYSTEM COMPONENTS

A complete explosion-proof floor scale system from GSS comprises the following core components. Each component is selected and matched by our technical team to ensure full system compliance in your specific hazardous zone classification.

ComponentDescription
Scale Platform / BaseStructural foundation of the weighing system. Available in 304 stainless steel or mild steel. Sizes and capacities vary by model. The platform houses the load cells and bears all mechanical load.
Load CellsTransducers that convert applied weight into an electrical signal. METTLER TOLEDO systems use either analog load cells (stainless steel, hermetically sealed) or POWERCELL® digital load cells (PFD779) for superior accuracy and individual diagnostics.
Junction BoxConsolidates the load cell signals from all corners of the platform into a single output. In explosion-proof configurations, junction boxes are rated IP69K and stainless steel. The POWERCELL® system (PFD779) eliminates the need for traditional junction boxes entirely.
Intrinsic Safety Barrier / Zener BarrierRequired for Zone 1/21 and Zone 2/22 installations. Limits the energy in the hazardous area circuit to levels incapable of causing ignition, even under fault conditions.
Weighing Terminal / IndicatorThe operator interface displaying weight readings, providing tare, net/gross functions, and process outputs. For hazardous areas, METTLER TOLEDO offers Ex-rated terminals (e.g., IND560x, IND570xx, IND780x) with appropriate enclosure and electrical protection.
Signal Cable / Connection HarnessRated, shielded cable connecting the platform to the terminal. Length and specification depend on installation distance and zone classification.
Mounting Feet / Levelling PadsAdjustable feet ensure the platform sits level on uneven floors. Critical for measurement accuracy. Rubber pads or stainless steel options depending on environment.
Optional Ramp KitFor PFD779 and PFA584 installations requiring above-floor mounting. Not required for PTA469 (U-shaped design) or PFA569 (low-profile).
Optional Pit Frame / LinerFor flush-to-floor pit installations. Ensures a flush surface for rolling loads directly onto the platform. Available as Quick-Pit frame or full pit liner for the PFD779 and PFA584.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

What is an explosion-proof floor scale?
An explosion-proof floor scale — also called a hazardous-area scale or intrinsically safe floor scale — is a weighing instrument certified for use in classified explosive atmospheres. Certification means the scale has been tested and proven incapable of generating enough electrical energy or heat to ignite flammable gases, vapors, or combustible dusts present in the surrounding environment. These scales carry approvals from bodies such as ATEX (EU/GCC), IECEx, and FM, depending on the region of operation.

What is the difference between Zone 1, Zone 2, and Division 1/2?
Zones and Divisions both describe how frequently a potentially explosive atmosphere is present in a given area. Zone 1/Division 1 means an explosive atmosphere exists under normal operating conditions — standard day-to-day operations. Zone 2/Division 2 means an explosive atmosphere is not normally present but could occur during abnormal conditions, spills, or maintenance activities. Zones are classified under IEC/ATEX standards (Europe, Asia, GCC, Africa); Divisions under the NFPA NEC (United States). Equipment must be approved for the specific zone in which it will be installed — a Zone 2 scale cannot be used in a Zone 1 area without the appropriate certifications.

Which of these scales can be used in Zone 1/21?
The PFA569 Liftop, when configured with fully intrinsically safe load cells and an approved IS barrier and terminal, is suitable for Zone 1/21 applications. The PFD779, PFA584, and PTA469 are standard-configured for Zone 2/22. Contact GSS if you require Zone 1 certification — we will specify the correct configuration and supporting components.

Can these scales be installed in a pit or flush to the floor?
Yes. The PFD779 and PFA584 can be installed either above floor level (top-of-floor) or in a prepared pit using a Quick-Pit frame or pit liner. Pit installation provides a flush surface ideal for rolling pallet jacks or carts directly across. The PTA469’s U-shape eliminates this requirement — its open geometry allows loading from the side at ground level without a pit or ramp.

What type of weighing terminals are compatible with these scales in hazardous areas?
For hazardous area installations, the weighing terminal must also carry the appropriate Ex rating and be located either within the hazardous zone (using an explosion-proof or purge/pressurized enclosure) or outside it (with a certified intrinsic safety barrier in between). Compatible Mettler Toledo terminals for Ex applications include the IND560x, IND570xx, and IND780x. GSS specifies the complete system — platform, barrier, and terminal — to ensure full installation compliance.

How often do explosion-proof floor scales need to be inspected?
For fixed installations, IEC guidelines recommend a maximum interval of 3 years between periodic inspections, subject to expert review. For moveable or portable equipment, the interval should not exceed 12 months. Enclosures that are regularly accessed (such as battery compartments) require detailed inspection at a minimum every 6 months. All equipment should be visually inspected by a trained operator before each use. GSS offers calibration and preventive maintenance contracts aligned with these requirements.

Do these scales comply with SASO and NMI metrological requirements?
Yes. All Mettler Toledo floor scales in this range carry OIML certification, which forms the technical basis for legal-for-trade approval under SASO (Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization) and equivalent regional bodies in the GCC. GSS, as the official Mettler Toledo partner in KSA and UAE, supports customers through the SASO type approval and site verification process.

What is the difference between the PFA584 and the PFD779?
The PFA584 is a modular, configurable platform scale best suited for environments where flexibility and global procurement standardisation are priorities. It uses analog or SICSpro load cells and is configurable for mild steel or stainless steel. The PFD779 PowerDeck™ is a premium-tier scale using METTLER TOLEDO POWERCELL® digital load cells, delivering significantly higher accuracy (up to 10,000e), real-time operator guidance, and built-in diagnostics. The PFD779 is the right choice where accuracy, diagnostics, and long-term performance in harsh environments are the primary drivers.

Can I weigh pallets on the PFD779 or PFA584?
Yes, both can be used for pallet weighing. However, if your primary workflow involves loading pallets with a pallet jack or forklift, the PTA469 U-scale is a more efficient choice — the open channel eliminates the need for ramps, speeds up loading, and reduces drive-over wear on the platform.

How do I get a quote for a hazardous area floor scale in Saudi Arabia or UAE?
